英文作文公开课（四）—— 写主题陈述

同学们好！ 上次课我讲了如何写提纲，现在我来讲一讲如何写主题陈述（Thesis Statement））。

 

Please answer my question first: what is a thesis statement?

 

Jack站起来，回答说：

A thesis statement is usually one sentence that tells the main point of an essay.

 

Peter接着说：

The thesis statement is then "proven" throughout the paper with supporting evidence.

 

他们俩都说得很对。主题陈述，顾名思义，就是要开明宗义地提出文章的主旨是什么。“主题陈述句”通常放在文章首段的末尾。然后，下面正文的整个部分，都是举出证据来支持和论证这个主题的。

 

下面我向大家介绍一种常用的，被称之为three-pronged thesis statement的主题陈述句。

A three-pronged thesis statement is a sentence that includes three reasons to support the thesis.

 

这里，用“三线插头”的比喻来说明这类主题陈述句的特点，非常形象生动。举出三个理由来支持论文所提出的观点，就像把三线插头插入底座一样，牢固稳实，令人信服。

 

老子讲，道生一，一生二，二生三，三生万物。“三”这个数被认为是众多的意思。一个观点，有三个理由支持和证明，就等于有众多的理由支持和证明。

 

接着，我们来看一看例子。

 

例子一：

We should wear school uniforms because they would help reduce discipline, be cheaper than other clothing, and help create school pride.

    “我们应该穿校服”的三个理由是：

• 有助于减少纪律约束；
• 比其他衣服便宜；
• 有助于树立学校自豪感。

 

例如二：

2. Zoos should be banned because animals need to remain in the wild, zoos cannot provide natural experiences for animals, and animals in zoos get sick and die.

    “应该取缔动物园”的三个理由是：

• 动物需要在野外生活；
• 动物园没法给动物提供自然环境的体验；
• 动物园的动物容易生病和死亡。

 

我在辅导和批改中学生英文作业的时候，多数情况下，遇到的是这种three-pronged thesis statement的作文。

 

当然，这类论文的主题陈述形式不能代表全部英文作文的主题陈述方式，有时我们也会见到其他的一些主题陈述的表达形式。例如：

 

1. The moral of this novel is that love always wins.

        (The essay would present evidence and reasons to support that this is the moral of the novel.)

 

2. Those running for President should be held to a higher standard of ethical behavior.

        (The essay would present evidence and reasons to support why those running for President should have higher standards for ethical behavior.)

 

3. The vaccine created by our team of researchers is promising in the fight against the virus.

        (The research paper would present evidence and reasons why the vaccine might work against the virus.)

归纳起来说，写论文主题陈述，第一，要明确提出论文的主旨是什么；第二，要给出三个和三个以上的理由。理由的要点可以在主题陈述句中出现，也可以放在正文各段的主题句中。

下次课，我会接着给大家讲如何写主题句（Topic Sentence），最好不要错过哟。
